What is a trust?
A trust is a legal entity that allows the transfer of property to a trustee who will manage it for the benefit of you and your heirs and beneficiaries. The trustee can be the grantor who created the trust or, in many cases, a neutral third party such as a corporate trustee.
The assets held in a trust are directed by the trustee, who is controlled by the terms of the trust. Some benefits of trusts include:
- Assets held in trusts generally avoid the probate process
- Minimization of estate tax in some cases
- Ability to direct assets to the beneficiaries of your choice, even after death or disability
- Asset protection from the creditors of a beneficiary
Through Wachovia Trust, we have the capability to offer a variety of trust accounts, including charitable trusts, living trusts, unified credit trusts, asset protection trusts, and marital trusts. Talk to a Wachovia Securities Financial Advisor to identify the best trust account for your needs.
